Wiley’s New Style

October 28, 2009

Without trying to sound like rebore Wu Tang, Wiley has fathered many lyrical and musical styles. However, his recent commercial successes, whilst broadening his rapping vocabulary (or narrowing it, depending on how you look at it), have caused a bit of a dry spell on the production front.

But now, it looks like he’s back to his button-bashing best. Over the past couple of months, a few Wiley productions have surfaced that have really caught my attention. Showcasing frenetic drum patterns, little or no melody and sharp interjections of vocal snippets, they contain a hint of the old school, whilst also being totally current and banging.

They are:

Wiley feat. The England 10 – She Likes To

The drums on this kill it. With two kicks battling against skittish hihats and percussive ‘Yelps!’ this is sure to smash it in the clubs. It’s big, brash and dramatic.

Wiley & Shifty vs. Ghetts & Devlin – 1,2,3, GO

This is oestensibly a rap battle track, fully updated and pumped full of adreniline for 2009. The drums are similar to She Likes To but the repeated ‘1,2,3’ refrain adds a nice lead into each verse.

The third example is Fumin’s ‘Out Of The Game’ featuring Wiley, Ice Kid, Jookie Mundo and Diesle, but I couldn’t find a video for it 😛 Sick new style for the Godfather, proving there’s plenty of life in him yet.

Rza on Kung-Fu, Directing, an ODB Biopic and Sperm

October 23, 2009

In a new interview with The Onion, Wu-Tang’s main disciple discusses everything Wu related, everything Kung-Fu related, and his entrance into filmmaking. Find me another interview where you’re going to find discussions on Dawn of the Dead, Malcolm X and sperm cells and I shall hand you a googlewhack stamp. The RZA also gave away a little snippet on the upcoming biopic of Ol’ Dirty Bastard, his role on The Last Dragon remake and his directorial debut, the kung-fu flick The Man With the Iron Fist, under the supervision of close friend and torture flick specialist Eli Roth. Glad to know Bobby Dig isn’t slowing any time soon.

The charismatic Dirty never backed away from a scandal. As well as delivering a style never seen nor heard previously, he fathered numerous children, had countless run ins with the law and made food stamps commercial. Here’s Rza on the O.D.B project,

“We have talked about it. His estate is pretty confused, like any estate is in our country. The estate is kind of confused on what to do, and all the rights and all that shit, but it’s definitely been talked about. There’s also been talk about a Wu-Tang Clan movie. So we’ll see what life brings. In my opinion, I’d rather see an ODB pic than a Wu-Tang Clan pic. But an ODB pic, just to really describe his life, would be good. Right now, there is a documentary that’s done that’s pretty good. It ain’t a knock out of the park, but it’s pretty good, it gives a nice piece of him. Then you start with that, and we can build more awareness about his life, and build more interest in people seeing a movie about it.”

The main question is, who can bring that Dirt McGirt charisma on screen? The Playlist believe that Bed-Stuy’s Chris Rock could tackle the project, others have suggested Dave Chappelle emerging from the London comedy clubs to give it try. As much as I would love to see Dave taking on the part, I think the chances of getting him are as likely as U-God’s next LP going triple platinum.

Whoever Rza chooses, their going to have a big task encapsulating this…

Fresh Wu Tang Vs Dekline Shoes

September 25, 2009

A number of years ago, an MTV Cribs episode featuring Wu-Tang at their LA hideaway revealed a serious dilemma. As Raekwon explained:

“In LA the climate is always off the hook out here. So you ain’t really got time to get fly, ‘coz by the time you get fly – it’s too hot!”

Indeed hiphop wear (denim, leathers, sweatshirts, bling, hi-tops etc) and hot weather do not mix. Thank God then, for this belated collaboration between the Staten Island crew and skate company Dekline.

This deck shoe combines lightweight PVC uppers and rubber sole with iconic Wu-Tang yellow & black branding. It’s a fashion Triumph! C.R.E.A.M. of the crop! Sure to grip the Gravel Pit!” (You see where I’m going with this?)

Rza & Raekwon (Wu Tang) @ Matter 3rd October

September 14, 2009

Say No More. Expect rugged beats rhymes and a sh*tload of crazy wiggas!

From Matter’s website:

Two of the key members of arguably the most influential hip-hop collectives of all time join forces once more at matter in October to present the Tao of Wu UK Tour, in support of the release of RZA’s new book – the follow-up to 2005’s Wu-Tang Manual, which details RZA’s own personal journey to enlightenment by utilizing hip-hop lyrics, autobiographical anecdotes and parables, explaining how one of the rap’s most important producers was simultaneously inspired by Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity, Bruce Lee, and Islam.

He’s joined onstage by Raekwon – aka The Chef, who returns to matter following the release of his new album Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2, which has been widely acclaimed as one of the best solo albums yet made by a Wu Tang member. Having previously performed live at matter’s hip hop all-nighter in May, he makes a greatly anticipated return to the venue for another hip hop showcase. DJ support for this very special live show will be provided by DJ Semtex.
