i-D Magazine 30th Birthday Issue

August 10, 2010

30 years is a long time in fashion. Long enough to see trends come, go, come back again, go again and return in an endless cycle that may make you wonder what the point of it all is… ahem, sorry, I digress.

This month, venerable fashion and style bible i-D hits that big ol’ three-oh milestone, and to celebrate they have commissioned a special issue with three different collector’s covers, featuring Kate Moss, Lady Gaga and Naomi Campbell respectively.

Editor-in-Chief Terry Jones had this to say:

“30 years – whoosh, more than an instant in i-D’s lifeline – it’s a generation. Three decades to be celebrated and contained in this special issue. The whole issue was created by Nick Knight 200 portraits that SHOWstudio made at the close of 2009 in Somerset House – once the home of British passports, now the central location for British Fashion Week. Nick’s celebration of identity was also a commemorative project inspired by the 5th birthday issue of i-D, where 100 portraits were featured in The Grown Up Issue. 25 years on, the gallery selection grew to 200. Happy birthday!”

Happy birthday indeed.

Oliver Peoples x Balmain Sunglasses

February 2, 2010

null

Have you walked down a High Street recently and seen a fashionable young woman walking around with big shoulder pads like something from the 1980’s? If so, then you can blame Balmain. Their structured jackets from the fall/winter 2009 ready-to-wear show formed a major jumpoff point for ‘power shoulders’ some months ago (can’t say I see the appeal myself – yet another example of fashion for irony than aesthetics, but I digress.)

This is their latest project, a collaboration with eyewear brand Oliver Peoples. Now I’m not normally a sunglasses man – crazily scared of getting panda eyes – but these I like. One of two limited-edition styles, the classic aviator look is not something that everyone can pull off but when you can…

These will retail for $595, available from March/April, so keep ’em peeled.

Leica x Hermes M7 (Limited Edition)

November 26, 2009

Leica, everyone’s favourite vintage camera brand, has joined forces with Hermes to produce the limited edition M7 in Hermes’ trademark orange/tan colourways with chrome accents. Only 100 of these will be produced, for the rather exorbitant price of $14,000 each. Bargain. I have to say that the look of these goes perfectly with Hermes’ a/w 09/10 collection – the vintage airman aesthetic is truly captured in this item – you can almost imagine seeing it in the cockpit of a Lancaster bomber circa 1942. Very, very nice.

Y-3 x MOMO Hayworth II Mids

October 14, 2009

New shots of a collaborative effort between Y-3 and New York artist MOMO. Only 350 pairs of these worldwide, so you probably won’t get your hands on some… but hey, you can dream.

KRINK 8-Litre Ink Extinguisher

September 29, 2009

This, graffiti fans, is the mother lode.

Krink’s Craig Costello has just helped thousands of street artists worldwide reach a heady climax with this, an 8-litre, fully functioning fire extinguisher that sprays ink. Produced in a limited run of 20, it’s pretty certain that the lucky few to get their hands on one will be putting up some pretty impressive displays in the future…
