Trailer for the new ‘Wu Tang Revealed’ documentary, made by the GZA, showcasing what life is really like on the road with the Clan. Should be a sick film!

Kanye West – Power

August 7, 2010

For those who think Mr. West has something of a God complex, I present to you the (shortened) video for Power. Directed by Marco Brambilla, this dynamic living portrait is somewhat over the top but, admittedly, is also visually stunning. Coming in at a lean 1:42, the video is a tad shorter than one might expect, but let’s be honest; could you really sit and watch this ode to Yeezy for a full three-and-a-half?

My Year of Mixtapes

March 24, 2010

Yesterday a friend put me onto the blog of one Chrissy Murderbot, a ‘Chicago-based DJ/Producer in love with juke-rave-jungle-disco-dubstep-hi-NRG-gangsta-dancehall-ghetto-garage-core’. His blog, My Year of Mixtapes, is where Mr. Murderbot endeavours to post one free downloadable mixtape each week for an entire year. 52 weeks, 52 mixtapes.

The sheer scope of different genres available is pretty impressive – from early 90’s rave to ‘Neue Deutsche Welle’ each mix is accompanied by a short explanation of the roots of that genre – some of them have proven to be a fascinating read, as Chrissy’s extensive musical knowledge contextualises each individual mix. Of particular note are the Booty Bass, New Jack Swing and UK Funky mixes (well, to my ear anyway, different strokes for different folks!)

Be sure to check the blog out here.

The Real Hip Hop is Over Here

October 14, 2009

In celebration of the 30 anniversary of Rappers Delight, the Beeb has done a short little piece following a New York paramedic who, as a very young photojournalist was the unofficial documenter of the ‘birth of hip-hop’.

The 14th of October, 1979 was a special day for Sugarhill fans worldwide. But lest we forget a few days later, the non-commercial entity Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five gave us the seminal Superrappin’. Hip Hop subsequently arrived to a mass commercial audience. Did somebody say irony?

You didn’t?…well just carry on jiving then, ya sucka ass turkey!

Click HERE for the BBC video on the birth of Hip-Hop

Ps. How silly of me, did i forget to mention the death of it?

Lupe Fiasco – Fire

October 9, 2009

Lupe’s latest leak, Fire, represents a welcome return to form for one of Chi-Town’s finest. Dropping a Jimi Hendrix sample (from his track of the same name) into the mix, this cut is very likely to appear on ‘Lasers’, his highly-anticipated new album.

Get it here.

Alex Goose – Blueprint 3 Outtakes

October 6, 2009

Producer Alex Goose has made a small compilation of instrumentals that Jay-Z commissioned for his Blueprint 3 album, but never used. Jay isn’t on them obviously, but as they’re instrumentals feel free to rock your lyrics over the top and pretend to be Mr. Carter himself.

Available as a free download from here.

Fresh Wu Tang Vs Dekline Shoes

September 25, 2009

A number of years ago, an MTV Cribs episode featuring Wu-Tang at their LA hideaway revealed a serious dilemma. As Raekwon explained:

“In LA the climate is always off the hook out here. So you ain’t really got time to get fly, ‘coz by the time you get fly – it’s too hot!”

Indeed hiphop wear (denim, leathers, sweatshirts, bling, hi-tops etc) and hot weather do not mix. Thank God then, for this belated collaboration between the Staten Island crew and skate company Dekline.

This deck shoe combines lightweight PVC uppers and rubber sole with iconic Wu-Tang yellow & black branding. It’s a fashion Triumph! C.R.E.A.M. of the crop! Sure to grip the Gravel Pit!” (You see where I’m going with this?)
